“A Great Night in Harlem”

Since 2001, the Jazz Foundation of America has produced an annual gala at the Apollo Theater called “A Great Night in Harlem.” This benefit concert is always one of the best nights of the year in New York City. It brings together all-time legends and unknown gems from the worlds of jazz, blues, rock, and soul.

Past galas have included performances by John Mayer, Keith Richards, Roberta Flack, Chaka Khan, Bono, Herbie Hancock and the Mwandishi Band, Hank Jones, Elvis Costello, Diane Reeves, Dave Brubeck, Norah Jones, and Dr. John, with special appearances by Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Chevy Chase, Jeffrey Wright, and Whoopi Goldberg.

Our honorees have included such legends as Harry Belafonte, Tony Bennett, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Ambassador Andrew Young, Clark Terry, Maurice White, George Wein, Claude Nobs, and Congressman John Conyers.

“This is my favorite night of the year.  It’s so meaningful, with the best musicians in the world coming out for an organization that helps so many, straight from the heart.”

“It’s really easy to just say yes and come out and play music and raise money and help people. It’s a great foundation, with great people.”

“Great room, and with all the other cats that are under this roof at the moment you probably have just about the creme de la creme. And all that jazz.”

“With the business being what it is today, and as it’s always been, any organization that is helping older and needy musicians is a beautiful thing. I’m really honored to be here for this.”
