According to Mark Stryker of the Detroit Free Press, James Carter is a "Detroit-born jazz saxophonist who plays with the unpredictability and vehemence of a volcano." An esteemed virtuoso highly regarded for his musical ideas and encyclopedic knowledge of the saxophone family, Carter has released more than a dozen wide-ranging albums under his name while lighting up sessions and stages alongside greats like Hamiet Bluiett, Betty Carter, Cyrus Chestnut, Lester Bowie, Julius Hemphill, Kathleen Battle, Frank Lowe, and the World Saxophone Quartet.
