Herman Leonard commenting on Charlie Parker:
“He absolutely stunned me on first hearing him do standards. I couldn’t believe the speed and diversity of the variations springing from that horn which he often pawned for a drink. One’s ear had to be retuned in those days to understand. But his private manner was quiet and modest, almost subdued; yet he loved life in all its forms . . .for as long as it lasted.”
