Sep 6th - Danny Mixon Trio: Born in Harlem and long based in Brooklyn, pianist Danny Mixon is one of New York City's jazz treasures. His expressive technique and mastery of the blues have been on keen display from his early days with Patti Labelle and Betty Carter, through engagements with Charles Mingus and Yusef Lateef, and as a frequent leader at local institutions like Showman's, the Lenox Lounge and Jazz 966.
Sep 13th - Tulivu's Seasoned Elegance: The unique vocal stylist Tulivu Donna Cumberbatch grew up in the Brooklyn jazz scene, the daughter of baritone saxophonist Harold Cumberbatch. A formidable bandleader and a renowned featured vocalist in settings from the Brooklyn Philharmonic and the Kronos Quartet to the groups of John Hicks and Andy Bey, she has, in the words of the late, great Randy Weston, “. . . beautiful phrasing and the spirit of our ancestors in her sound past present and future.”
Sept 20th- Gene Ghee Quartet: A Brooklyn jazz mainstay, tenor saxophonist Gene Ghee has led groups, taught in schools, and lit up the stage for several decades, while appearing on recordings by Julius Hemphill, Stevie Wonder, T.S. Monk, and Muhal Richard Abrams.
Sept 27th- Greg Lewis Organ Monk: Virtuoso organist, pianist and composer Greg Lewis is ubiquitous in the city's jazz, blues and funk scenes. Raving about this project, which brings the works of Thelonious Monk to a fiery organ-based format, critic Howard Mandel wrote of Lewis: "He's possessed with making music that flies."
