A refreshing alternative to the standard jazz band, the all-female ensemble Firey String Sistas! is engaging and inspiring. Founded by the noted cellist Nioka Workman, the group is comprised of violin, cello, bass, piano and drums. Their performances incorporate world music, women’s culture, string improvisation and a deep connection to jazz history. FSS has been featured in exciting events around the USA including the Paul Brown Jazz Series, Springfield Jazz and Roots in Festival, the International African Arts Festival, the Baby Grand Jazz Series, Sugar Hill Music Festival, Coltrane Day Festival, Hudson River Museum, Brooklyn Academy of Music, and South Orange Performing Arts Center-WBGO Jazz Kid’s Series, among many more. Their last CD, That’s What She Said earned rave reviews from critics and airplay on WKCR , WWUH, WBAI and WBGO radio.
