You are now able to attend these performances at the Jazz Museum in New Orleans. These series are also carried on Off Beat Magazine and Louisiana Music Factory Facebook pages. For this week's performance the Jazz Foundation of America is proud to present:
November 1st, 2023
The Joshua Smith Quartet
New Orleans based Saxophonist Joshua Smith will lead this powerhouse quartet, along with Ohio based pianist Keigo Hirakawa, and New Orleans own Peter Harris on Bass, and Jason Marsalis on Drums. This group delves into original modern jazz that is both beautiful and challenging. They perform their unique brand of modern jazz with a strong sense of telepathy, and a voracious appetite for melodic interplay, while exploring the depths of improvising fluidly throughout their unique jazz forms. Joshua Smith is a jazz saxophonist who has performed a wide swath of musical endeavours. He has been a member of the well-loved experimental jazz trio Birth for the past 25 years, and he's played with a who's who of the creative jazz world including Joe Lovano, Scott Amendola, Ben Goldberg, Trevor Dunn, Carmen Castaldi, Joe Maneri, Nate Wooley, Cuong Vu, Dave King and many more. He currently performs and collaborates with several New Orleans based jazz groups, and gigs with many notable players of the area. Having grown up playing jazz together as teenagers in Cleveland, Ohio, Joshua and pianist Keigo Hirawakawa share a deep and long-running musical bond. Over the past 30 years they have developed a unique musical shorthand, cutting their teeth on jazz standards and the Great American Songbook, and eventually branching out into all forms of original modern jazz and improvisation. This breadth of musical experience comes through their music. The pair co-lead their quartet on the record release Hessler-Cabrillo Rundown. The music on November 1st will feature compositions from Smith and Hirakawa. Join us for a set of no holds barred original jazz to sink your ears into!
