Aug 3 - Greg Lewis: Hammond B3 organist Greg Lewis has so devoted himself to the mastery of his instrument that he is known as an “organ monk.” Lewis is a mainstay on the city's jazz, blues and funk scenes. His “encyclopedic knowledge” of pianist/composer Thelonious Monk’s repertory was seemingly made for the conception of Lewis’ Organ Monk CD trilogy in which he transfers Monk’s compositions (plus a few originals) to the Hammond B3 organ. Howard Mandel wrote of Lewis: "He's possessed with making music that flies.
Aug 10 - Mel Davis & Friends: Melvin Davis, recording artist, vocalist, keyboard player and organist extraordinaire, has understood the power of his hands to transport the sound of instruments from his imagination to a concert hall or nightclub full of eager twitching bodies for all of his life, dating back to childhood. He played his first piano recital at 9, and, at 15, when cats his age were learning how to charm young ladies, Davis was sneaking into local night clubs, hoping to charm the Hammond B3.
Aug 17 - Kelvyn Bell: Jazz Funk guitarist and vocalist, Bell studied guitar under Oliver Lake and, through Lake, became a member of the Black Artists Group, meeting musicians such as Hamiett Bluiett, Lester Bowie, and Joseph Bowie. He became a member of Defunkt, Joseph Bowie's ensemble, from 1980 to 1988, concomitantly leading his own band, Kelvynator (featuring Eric Person). He's also worked with Steve Coleman, Michele Rosewoman, Jean-Paul Bourelly, Bob Stewart, Elliott Sharp, David Fiuczynski, Marc Ribot and Cassandra Wilson.
Aug 24 - Steve Swell Kende Dreams: Kende Dreams began as an homage to Béla Bartok and sources its name from the “Kende,” the spiritual leader of the early Hungarian tribe known as the Maygars. Although thought to be wiped out, the spirit of the Kende strives to assert itself in art, music and throughout modern society.
